December 11-15

 This week is review week. We will be reviewing the reading standard of text structure and the grammar standard of identifying prepositions, prepositional phrases, and the object of the preposition.
  • There will be NO HOMEWORK this week. Merry Christmas!
  • We will be making up last Friday's reading test on Monday, December 11th. It will consist of 10 short passages and the student will identify the correct text structure. There will also be another reading quiz on Thursday identifying text structure and a grammar test.
  • Last week's tests will still go home on Tuesday, December 12.
  • If your child makes a D (60-69) or an F (59 and below), please sign the test and return it by Friday the 15th. 
  • Please continue to talk with your child about their school work, homework, conduct, notes from the school/teachers, etc. I will continue to sign conduct folders for failure to bring materials to class, failure to return signed papers, leaving belongings in my class, behavior, etc!
  • Not signing D/F test papers (violation 1.13) is getting the students in the most trouble. Please ask your student daily if they need anything signed.

  • This week's grammar skill is Greek and Latin word parts. There will be a grammar quiz on Thursday.
  • There will be a spelling test on Friday, October 6. The spelling words are astronomy, astronaut, chronic, chronological, chronicle, cyclical, cyclone, hydrant, hydrate, optical, optician, tractor, attract, rupture, interrupt, erupt, audible, audio, dictate, and verdict.
  • There will be a reading test on Friday. It will consist of a cold read passage and question set.
  • Last week's tests go home on Tuesday. I also graded the entire homework questions for the story Interrupted Journey. All of the answers were from the story, so I graded the assignment as a separate grade for the week. I had lots and lots of 100s!!!!

    August 28-September 1

  • This week's story is When Washington Crossed the Delaware.
  • This week's focus skill is Text Structure: Sequence.
  • This week's vocabulary words are persuading, crucial, maneuvered, encountered, crisis, appealed, perseverance, and destiny.
  • This week's grammar skill is context clues.
  •  Reading homework went home on Monday, but is not due until Friday. I grade some of the homework responses, so please make sure your child returns it correctly by Friday.
  • There will be a reading test on Friday. It will consist of a cold read passage, comprehension questions about this week's story, and vocabulary sentences.
  • Last week's tests will go home on Tuesday.
  • If your child makes a D (60-69) or an F (59 and below), please sign the test and return it by Friday.

    August 21-25

    • There will not be a story from the reading textbook this week. We will be doing various activities reviewing the reading standard: conflict, plot, and resolution.
    • Reading homework goes home on Monday, but is not due until Friday.
    • There will be a reading quiz on Friday that consist of a cold read passage and question set.
    • We are still working on idioms in grammar. There will be a short quiz on idioms on Friday.
    • Tests from last Friday will go home on Tuesday of this week. Remember if your child makes a D (60-69) or and F (59 or below), you must sign and return that test by Friday of this week.

    August 14-18

    First off I would like to thank you all for such a great first week of school. All the students were very well behaved and very responsible in getting all of the paperwork signed and returned. There is additional paperwork that went home today, so please sign and return tomorrow.

  • We are running a regular routine this week, so if you have any questions please let me know!
  • This week's reading story is Rope Burn (pages 26-39).
  • This week's reading standard is conflict, plot, and resolution.
  • This week's vocabulary words are humiliation, fringes, expectations, coaxed, sincere, and hesitating.
  • This week's grammar skill is idioms.
  • Homework went home today. The homework is not due until Friday. Homework is part of your child's reading grade, so please make sure it is completed and returned by Friday.
  • There is a reading test on Friday. It will consist of a cold read passage, comprehension questions about Rope Burn and vocabulary sentences. I will also be grading numbers 5 and 13 from this week's homework, so please make sure it is correct and complete.

    • I am still accepting classroom donation of $35.00. Thanks to the parents of Sadie, Madison, Austin, Josie, Adelay, Kevin, Braden, Cason, and Dubal for already sending in the donation.

  • DARE graduation is Tuesday, January 17th at 6:00.
  • OIS Award's Day is Friday, January 20th at 10:30 for 5th grade.

  • This week's vocabulary words are extravagant, unimaginable, gourmet, throng, embarked, precarious, and hiatus.
  • This week's focus skill is making inferences.

  • There will be a reading and grammar test on Friday.
