Thanks to everyone who came out to Open House last Monday night! Mrs. Tillman and I have such great classes!!
This week's story is When Washington Crossed the Delaware.
This week's genre is narrative nonfiction.
This week's focus skill is Text Structure: Sequence.
We are beginning spelling words this week. This week's spelling words are want, won't, said, there, their, they're, through, threw, your, and you're. These are words that are commonly misspelled in the students' writing.
This week's grammar skill is prepositions and prepositional phrases.
We are working on chapter 3 in social studies this week.
Report cards go home on Thursday, October 24th. Please review your child's grades. Sign and return as soon as possible. If you would like to conference (phone or in person), please let me know!
There will be a reading, spelling, and grammar test on Friday.
Last week's tests come home on Wednesday this week because of no school on Monday.
If your child makes a D (60-69) or an F (59 and below), please sign the test and return it the next day.

School pictures money is due no later than October 16th.
OIS is having the 3rd Annual Candy Crash on Tuesday, October 29th. This is open to everyone, not just OIS students! PLEASE send in a bag of candy as soon as possible!

- Please have your child wear red, white, and/or blue on Tuesday, September 17th for Constitution/Citizenship Day!
- 5th Grade will be celebrating Grandparent's Day on Thursday, September 19th in the lunchroom at 11:30. Grandparents can meet us at the lunchroom, since we have such a long walk.
- We are still working in chapter 2 in social studies this week. Test will probably be some time next week. Remember all social studies tests are OPEN book and page numbers given!
- There will be a reading and grammar test on Friday.
- Last week's tests come home on Tuesday, including chapter 1 social studies tests.

- This week's spelling words are homophones: steal, steel, waste, waist, weak, week, base, bass, pain, pane, flare, flair, dual, duel, stationary, stationery, flower, flour, sight, and site. The students will need to know what each word means because they will have to spell the correct homophone that fits in the sentence.
- This week's grammar skill is main and helping verbs.
- Make sure your child is studying the DOL study guide on Thursday nights!
- We will be completing chapter 8 in social studies this week and taking the open book test.
- The spelling, grammar, and reading tests will be Thursday this week instead of Friday because of the bowling field trip.
